Xavier Hennekinne

co-founder and publisher

Growing up in France and working internationally before settling in Sydney, Xavier brings to the Australian literary scene a passion for sharing stories that explore different cultures and styles of writing.

Not finding enough of the types of books he liked to read after moving to Australia, the idea of starting a publishing house took root and in 2018, Gazebo Books came to life, launching its first highly acclaimed title, The Lovers by Catherine Rey.

As a writer himself, Xavier has had his own short stories and essays published internationally and has written three books in English, including the illustrated novel Lost Words. Now, as a publisher, he is thrilled to be collaborating with authors, artists and translators on Gazebo’s growing collection of book titles.

Phil Day has made drawings for poems, novels, and cartoons. His drawings can be found in collections and publications, including the National Gallery of Australia and the New Yorker, respectively.

Phil Day

poetry editor and designer

For the better part of 30 years, Australian artist Phil Day has been involved in the illustration, design, printing, binding and publishing of literature. Over that time, he has collaborated with some of Australia’s most respected authors and poets, including Cassandra Atherton, Gary Catalano, Julian Davies and Robin Wallace-Crabbe.

Known for his caricaturist style, Phil’s work is represented in public collections across the country, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library of Australia and the State Libraries of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

He has also published cartoons in The New Yorker magazine in a collaboration with writer Julia Leigh, under the pen name JP. Phil is Gazebo’s head designer and the founder and curator of Gazebo’s poetry imprint, Life Before Man.

Lenka Miklos

Lead Editor

Towards the end of a youth spent rambling outdoors and reading a book a day, Lenka met a wise old woman who insisted that one must have a passion in life. Some years later, she finally understood that reading books in a patch of dappled sunlight could also be a useful occupation. Her love of language and sharp eye for detail, alongside a nervous system that senses the shapes and textures behind the visible, have found expression in helping writers find better ways to voice their ideas.

Writing about the process of writing, John McPhee said, ‘It doesn’t matter that something you’ve done before worked out well. Your last piece is never going to write your next one for you.’ It’s true for editing too. Each manuscript needs to be met with an open heart, as one meets a child and sees in them both who they are today and who they could become given thoughtful and responsive guidance. Lenka takes great delight in finding the places that need attention, from major restructuring to the nuance of a word in just the right place, always with the aim of creating a book ready give joy to its reader.
