New partnership with Seagull Books

Gazebo and Seagull join forces to bring world-renowned literary translations to Australia and New Zealand.
New Partnership With Seagull Books

Gazebo Books is announcing an exciting new partnership with international publisher Seagull Books to bring an impressive list of literary translations to the Australian and New Zealand market.

Seagull Books is widely considered one of the world’s most respected publishers of literature in English translation. Based in Kolkata, with offices in London and New York, it publishes over 50 books a year, almost 80 per cent of which are translations from various languages, including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Bengali, among others.

Titles destined for our shores include Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan’s comic masterpiece POW!, Palestinian poet and novelist Ghassan Zaqtan’s lyrical novel Where the Bird Disappeared and Marguerite Duras’s secret confession Suspended Passion. New books by Pascal Quignard and Israel’s Rachel Shihor are other standouts.

Gazebo’s co-founder and publisher Xavier Hennekinne says: “Since the 1980s, Seagull Books has commissioned and published the translation of literary treasures from around the world. This is a perfect partnership to further Gazebo’s mission of bringing literature that spans different cultures and languages to readers in Australia and New Zealand.”

Seagull’s founder and publisher Naveen Kishore says: “Now more than ever it has become imperative to understand each other — through exchanges across languages, cultures, ways of being — and what better way of doing this than translated literature, which allows words to travel and be read and understood. We look forward to this new initiative with Gazebo, helping to bring the best of world literature to Australia and New Zealand.”
