For curious minds… this set contains two of our latest non-fiction books by women in translation.
In Blind Spot, Ethiopian-French actress Myriam Tadessé draws on her personal experiences as a biracial woman and her family history to explore the realities of life for mixed-race people in contemporary France. This searing memoir traces Tadessé’s journey, from her adolescence in revolution-torn Ethiopia to her acting career in Paris – exposing the challenges of being seen as an individual in a world where racial stereotypes and assumptions prevail.
In Shades of Black, author and academic Nathalie Etoke offers a unique perspective on Black existence in predominantly white countries. As a French-born Cameroonian living in New York, her essay focuses on recent and ongoing events in the US, including the murder of George Floyd and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Both books are translated from the French by Gila Walker.
‘Myriam Tadessé’s memoir combines formal innovation with a candid look back on her life and the harrowing experiences she’s had with discrimination in her chosen field – and in French society as a whole. Blind Spot feels like a distillation of its author’s life, and a powerful testament to her day-to-day reality.’
