Ali Jane Smith is a poet and writer based in Wollongong. She has been shortlisted for the David Harold Tribe Poetry Prize, and was one of three writers selected for the inaugural Sydney Review of Books Emerging Critics program.

Many of Smith’s poems, first published in Southerly, Cordite, Australian Poetry Journal, Overland and elsewhere, are gathered in her debut collection The Strange Matter. ᯓ★ ೃ༄

The Strange Matter spans streets and gardens, books and films, people and things, creating a landscape that feels both familiar and surreal. Sometimes the language is sharp, sometimes lavish, documenting life as a waking dream, a relentless exploration of the everyday. Smith writes, ‘It is a relief to turn thoughts and feelings into a poem. Sometimes it is like making a chair, and sometimes it is like smashing concrete with a crowbar.’ Here, the chair might wobble, the cracks in the concrete twist like rivers. They take you somewhere, or tell you something.

Born in Rome in 1970, Marzano studied at the Normale Superiore in Pisa and since 1998 has been living in Paris, France, where she teaches moral philosophy at the Université Paris Descartes. Her fiction and non-fiction books have been translated from Italian and French into many other languages.
